How the Great Gatsby could have been a lot better

A timeless story about love and a little peek into the fascinating time period that was the 1920’s. The book was fantastic but was the movie? I don’t think so.

Let’s be real. Leo made that movie. If there’s no Leo, it’s an absolute complete bust.

The first thing that jumps off the page is the music selection. Part of the brilliance and allure of the 1920s was the music. There was no shortage of music the producers could have used but they instead chose some bizarre combination of modern-day hip hop and seemed to neglect the smooth jazz of the ’20s entirely.

The parties were definitely something I’d go to in real life. In 2021. The parties apart from the dress code were very…modern. I think they should have reflected what a party in the 20’s would have resembled. But alas, it seems that this is what we as a society crave. I just don’t know why. Call me an old soul, or a traditionalist.

You could argue that this scene alone made the movie

Part of the brilliance of movies like this is playing off the nostalgia that people have for a.) the book and b.) that time period.

The part they got right was the wardrobe — which was was exquisite. The tweed. The flowy dresses. Give the costume designer an A+.

What did you think about this movie?

Yours truly,

Roh
